New DelhiIndian opener Shubman Gill could be ruled out of the five-match series against England with an undisclosed internal injury and could be replaced by Abhimanyu Mithun, who is currently on stand-by. It is not clear whether Gill needs to undergo an operation before the series begins on August 4. A senior official of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said on the condition of anonymity, “Shubman is likely to be out of the entire Test series, although it is still a month away. As far as we know the injury is serious. It is believed that Gill has a calf injury or a problem with his hamstring, which will take time to heal. It is not known when he got this injury. Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul are the other two openers in the team. If Gill is out, Easwaran may find a place in the main team.
India had lost the WTC final
The historic final, played from 18 to 23 June, was rain-hit. On the first and fourth days, a ball could not be bowled. The second and third day’s play had to be called off early due to bad weather. The result of the match came on the sixth ie Reserve Day. New Zealand achieved the modest target of 139 runs given by India with eight wickets in hand. Pacer Kyle Jamieson was the man of the match.
Test series starts from 4th August
Indian players have got a break of about three weeks i.e. 20 days after the WTC final. All will meet again on July 14 and prepare for the five-match Test series starting in Nottingham on August 4. After the first Test ends on August 8, the second match will be played at Lord’s from the 12th. Third Test in Leeds from 25 August and fourth at The Oval from 2 September. The fifth and final Test of the series will take place in Manchester from 10 September.
