The Congress on Tuesday accused the central government of failing to contain inflation and taking advantage of the helplessness of the people and demanded relief to the people by reducing the prices of petroleum products and reducing the rates of GST on essential commodities. Senior party leader and former finance minister P Chidambaram also said that the Congress will raise the issue of inflation in the monsoon session of Parliament beginning July 19 and demand a full discussion. He said, “The NDA government is constantly trying to tell that the inflation concern is fake and if the government ignores this issue then this issue will be over. Congress party condemns the gross negligence of the central government on the issue of inflation. According to Chidambaram, “The government and the Reserve Bank had set an inflation rate target of around 4 per cent. While consumer inflation has crossed the maximum limit of 6 per cent and has reached 6.26 per cent, according to the release issued by NSO on Monday. Urban consumer inflation, which was 5.91 per cent in May, rose to 6.37 per cent in June. Core inflation increased from 5.5 per cent to 5.8 per cent in a month. “Food inflation has reached 5.58 per cent. Pulses inflation has risen to 10.01 per cent. The inflation rate of fruits has reached 11.82 percent. The inflation rate of transport service has gone up to 11.56 percent. Fuel inflation has gone up to 12.68 percent. He also said that the government is continuously increasing the prices of petrol, diesel and LPG. The former finance minister alleged, “People are helpless in front of inflation…the government is exploiting the helplessness of the people.” “The Congress party demands that the central government should reduce the prices of petrol, diesel and LPG substantially. We demand that the import duty be reviewed and re-fixed so that the essential commodities imported can be cheaper. He also said, “We also demand that the rates of GST should be reduced on those items which are used by the people on a large scale in day to day basis. We believe that these steps will bring relief to the people who are burdened with inflation. According to Chidambaram, “I want to say that the Congress will also raise the issue of inflation in the upcoming session of Parliament and will demand a full discussion on this subject and relief to the people.” He emphasized that no matter how much the government tries, the issue of inflation is not going to be suppressed.
