Conspiracy to kill Madagascar’s President, six including French national arrested

Police have arrested six people in connection with the failed attempt to assassinate the President of the United States. It is being told that one of the people arrested is a French national while two others have dual citizenship of France and Malagasy. After this conspiracy was busted, the security of President Andrey Rajolina has been tightened. Madagascar’s Minister of Public Security, Rodaleis Phanomgentsoa Randianrisson, said police interrogation of these people was ongoing. Madagascar has long been a colony of France.

Two accused have served in the French army
Madagascar’s Attorney General said six people had been arrested in the case after a month-long investigation. Patrick Rajoelina, an adviser to President Andrey Rajolina, said on Friday that two of those arrested had previously served in the French military. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it had been informed of the arrest of French nationals. Those caught can apply if they can get consular assistance.

French military denies comment
The French Armed Forces declined to comment on the role of the retired people involved in the incident. Patrick Rajoelina said that several steps had already been taken to tighten the security of the President. We have many proofs of this conspiracy. We certainly don’t take it lightly. There is also a naval base in Reunion Island of France near Madagascar.

History of Political Violence in Madagascar
Madagascar has a history of political violence and instability. 44-year-old Andrey Rajolina was sworn in as President in 2019 after a tough election defeating his rival. Then the matter of his victory in the election went to the court. Andrey Rajolina first took power after a coup in March 2009. He held power as the head of a transitional government until 2014.
