France’s prime minister says the nation is occurring emergency alert after the killings of three people on the Notre Dame Basilica within the southern metropolis of Nice.
A person armed with a knife attacked two girls and a person on the church Thursday morning before he was shot by police. As he lay wounded, the Nice mayor stated the attacker repeated “Allah Akbar!” time and again. French authorities have opened a terrorism investigation.
Prime Minister Jean Castex informed French lawmakers that the nation would increase its alert stage to “emergency” in response to the assault, which comes throughout excessive tensions over the re-publication of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad by the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo. The caricatures have ignited Muslim anger world wide.
Castex’s announcement arrive hours before France was to enter a one-month coronavirus lockdown.
