Increased strength of BSF, these states of border will have the right to search and arrest within a radius of 50 km

A major decision was taken by the Union Home Ministry regarding the Border Security Force (BSF). BSF personnel will now have the power to search and arrest within 50 km in the states of Assam, West Bengal and Punjab bordering Bangladesh and Pakistan. In all the three states, BSF personnel will now be able to take action on the lines of police in the border of the states as well. Its boundary which has been fixed is 50 km from the border. Earlier this range was 15 kms which has now been increased to 50 kms. The strength of BSF has increased in these states, while the scope of its jurisdiction has decreased in Gujarat. In Gujarat, the range has been reduced from 80 km to 50 km. Whereas in Rajasthan, this radius has been kept 50 km as before. The border area has been cut for the five northeastern states which are Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, Manipur. Now Border Security Force personnel can search up to a radius of 20 km. Earlier this range was 80 kms.
