Mohali: The off-spinner () of the Indian cricket team achieved a special place in the Mohali Test. He became India’s second most successful bowler in Test cricket. In this case, Ashwin left behind the former great bowler of the Indian team (). He surpassed Kapil Dev’s record of 434 wickets in Sri Lanka’s second innings by sending Charith Aslanka to the pavilion. Kapil Dev was the leading wicket-taker in Test matches when he retired in 1994. Now 9 bowlers have overtaken him. After overtaking himself, Kapil Dev has set a new target for Ravichandran Ashwin. Congratulating Ashwin, former India captain Kapil Dev told Mid-Day, “It’s a big achievement, especially for a player who hasn’t got enough opportunities in recent times.” If he had got those chances, he would have crossed 434 long ago. I am happy for him. Why should I stay there, my time has passed.’ Giving a new target to Ashwin, Kapil Dev said, ‘Ashwin is a brilliant cricketer, excellent and intelligent spinner. He should now target 500 Test wickets, which I am sure he will try and achieve. And even more.’ 35-year-old Ashwin will now play the day-night Test against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru. Ashwin has so far taken 436 wickets in 85 Tests he has played for India. He has taken these wickets at an average of 24.26 and strike rate of 52.5. Kapil Dev had to play 131 Test matches to take 434 wickets. The record of taking 619 wickets for India is in the name of Anil Kumble. He did this feat in 132 matches. Muttiah Muralitharan of Sri Lanka has the most 800 wickets in Test history.
