New DelhiMohammad Azharuddin () believes that (Rohit Sharma) should be made the next Test captain of the Indian team. The former Indian captain has advocated handing over the captaincy of the team in red ball cricket to limited overs captain Rohit. The selectors of the Indian cricket team have not yet chosen the next Test captain. Virat Kohli recently decided to leave the captaincy of the Test team. Since then the question is arising as to who will be given this command. Kohli resigned from his post after the defeat in the Test series against South Africa. Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul are considered to be the strongest contenders for the role. In a conversation with India News, Mohammad Azharuddin was asked who should be made the next captain of Team India. A player who can take the team forward for the next 5-6 years. Azhar said on this, ‘I see 5-6 years as a very long time. Of course, you should look for the long term but at the same time keep an eye on the recent situation. You can’t give captaincy to an inexperienced player just talking about the future, it can cause problems. Azhar expressed concern about Rohit Sharma’s fitness but he made it clear that he wants to see this Mumbai player as the team’s next Test captain. Azhar said, ‘I think Rohit Sharma is a good player and he can become a very good captain. He can play cricket for the next two to three years, he can play more, but fitness will be very important as his hamstring problem has come up several times. Azharuddin also said that South Africa has benefited from Rohit Sharma’s absence in the recent Test series. Azhar believes that Rohit is an aggressive player and his absence has been good for South Africa. Azhar said, ‘Rohit’s absence in this series also benefited South Africa. He is an aggressive player and bats in the same style. According to the amount of cricket I have played and the experience I have, the captaincy should be given to Rohit only. Rohit Sharma is not involved in the South Africa tour due to hamstring injury. KL Rahul has been given the responsibility of captaincy of the team in place of Rohit in ODIs. When Mohammad Azharuddin was asked if age does not go against Rohit. To this he said, ‘Suppose he is 34 years old, his age is not even that much. He can play 5-6 years comfortably. He is a batsman. If he was an all-rounder, I would have thought differently or would have given a different answer but since he is a batsman, it shouldn’t be much of a problem. Azhar also said that having the same captain in all three formats should not be a problem.
