India-EU Relations: Nearly two weeks have passed since Russia’s attack on Ukraine. Hundreds of people have lost their lives in this attack. More than 20 lakh people have been forced to migrate. This is not just a war between two countries. It has also tested the foreign policy of all the countries of the world. India (India Foreign Policy) is also included in those countries. Most countries including America, France, Britain, Germany have openly criticized the attack on Ukraine. But, India has not participated in it. In this case, he has taken a middle path. So far his stand has been neutral. This is also true for western countries. He is seen handling both the pans of the scales. Thus a question has arisen. That is, will India’s neutral stand hurt India’s relations with the West? Russia is the largest arms exporter in the world after the US. According to an estimate, its share in the total sale of arms is about 20 percent. India has been the largest importer of Russian weapons in recent years. India accounts for 23.3% of Russia’s total arms sales. It can be understood from this that how much India’s dependence on Russia is. America and other western countries also understand this very well. Britain’s Foreign Minister Liz Truss’s recent statement is a hallmark of this. He had said that India’s stand on Ukraine crisis is due to its dependence on Russia. The way forward is to ensure that the economic as well as defense ties between India and the UK are strengthened. After the attack on Ukraine, Prime Minister Modi spoke with both Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. During this, he also appealed to stop the war immediately. However, he has distanced himself from any criticism of Russia on the international stage. He has not participated in any of the five resolutions that have come to the United Nations so far criticizing Russia. It has repeatedly stated that it is committed to the principles of the UN Charter. It respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries in accordance with international law. India has kept both the western countries and Russia from this neutral stand. But, there is also tremendous pressure on him to be strict in his stance. According to media reports, all top officials of the European Union are in touch with the officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Last week, Prime Minister Modi held talks with several European leaders regarding the Ukraine crisis. These include French President Emmanuel Macron, Polish President Andrzej Duda and European Council President Charles Michel. Experts related to the matter say that European officials working with India are disappointed with India’s stand. However, he understands his position. In such a situation, everything will go on with India as before. There is not going to be any change in this. He will have to move forward with a lot of breath. By not siding with anyone on Ukraine crisis, India has also kept the trust of its friend Russia. Even when Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, it kept its stand neutral at the United Nations. India will have to keep an eye on China the most. His stand on Ukraine crisis is very important from India’s point of view. China’s close ties with Russia have increased in recent years. India has to see this. China is a threat to India. In such a situation, India will never go to such an extent that its own interests are in danger.
