About five years ago, in the Panama Papers leak, the names of many celebrities from around the world were revealed in the case of tax evasion. About two years later, Pakistan’s legendary cricketer Imran Khan came to power by making big promises. He had shown the dream of creating a ‘Naya Pakistan’. This dream was not fulfilled, good days have definitely come for his close ones. The Pandora Papers that have now surfaced include the names of close to Imran Khan along with about 700 Pakistanis, whose properties are alleged to be in the form of shell companies abroad.
Imran’s ministers name
According to Geo News, the country’s Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin, Water Resources Minister Moonis Elahi, Senator Faisal Wawada, Ishaq Dar’s son, PPP’s Sharjeel Memon, Industry and Production Minister Khusro Bakhtiar’s family, PTI leader Abdul Aleem Khan are the most prominent in this. Apart from these, the names of Shoaib Sheikh, CEO of Axact and owners of some media companies have also been included in the leak. After the report surfaced, Imran Khan claims that those whose names have appeared in the new list will be investigated and appropriate action will be taken if found guilty. He has appealed to the international community to take this issue as seriously as climate change.
‘Welcome to the leak’
Imran tweeted, ‘We welcome the one who has exposed the truth of the rich who amass wealth by wrong means, tax evasion and corruption and hawala money in financial havens. The UN Secretary-General’s FACTI has estimated $7 trillion in assets stolen and transported abroad.
‘Countries are not poor’
Imran further said that his struggle for two decades was on the premise that countries do not become poor but corruption creates poverty because money goes elsewhere instead of being invested on people. He has also said that thousands of poverty-related deaths occur because of this theft. Imran said that as the East India Company took away the wealth of India, similarly the elites of developing countries are doing it.
