Yeh Zindagi Hai, not a Bollywood film where there is a perfect ending every time. Harbhajan Singh, 41, might not even want to retire like this, in the manner in which he said goodbye to the cricket field today. Bhajji, who has been out of Team India since 2016, ended his ‘first innings’ by uploading a video on his YouTube channel. Although ‘Turbanator’ has raised flags of success against every team in the world, but his ‘Australia love’ is not hidden from anyone. He became the first Indian cricketer to take a hat-trick by taking three wickets in three consecutive balls against the Kangaroos itself. Today, on this special occasion, let’s remember that moment a little. The talk is from 2001. Then the Australian team was on a tour of India. The second match of the three-Test series was going on at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Harbhajan Singh was just 20 then. In the month of March, Kangaroo captain Steve Waugh won the toss and decided to bat first. The team got off to a good start. At one point the score was four wickets for 252 runs. Then that wondrous over from Harbhajan Singh turned the entire match upside down. Actually, Captain Steve Waugh was at the crease with Ricky Ponting. But within the next three balls, Australia’s score was seven for 252 runs. Harbhajan bowls the ball at full length and Ponting and Adam Gilchrist play the ball going back into the crease and fail to line up. While Shane Warne played the ball with the bat, he could not keep the ball down and was caught by Sadagopan Ramesh at forward short leg. The rivalry between Bhajji and Ponting started from this match. Harbhajan became the first bowler to take a hat-trick for India in Tests. The team led by Sourav Ganguly achieved a historic victory in the match. An important reason for this is considered to be the historic partnership between VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid on behalf of the Indian team to play follow-on, but the foundation was laid by off-spinner Bhajji’s hat-trick. Seven wickets in the first innings including a hat-trick and six in the second innings.
